10 Best Places to Host a Kids' Birthday Party in Omaha

20+ years of working Omaha birthday parties means I've seen every venue in town. Here's where I'd actually recommend, plus what works for different ages.

After 20+ years of bringing balloons to Omaha birthday parties, I’ve been to a LOT of venues. Some are amazing. Some are… not. Here’s where I’d actually recommend, plus what works for different ages and party sizes.

1. Henry Doorly Zoo

Good for: Ages 4–10. Indoor exhibits = built-in weather plan.

The Zoo offers party packages with reserved rooms. Pair with a balloon artist (hi 👋) and you’ve got a party kids remember for years. Once made a balloon penguin for a 6-year-old right after she saw the real penguins — the look on her face was unreal.

2. Lauritzen Gardens

Good for: Smaller groups (10–25), spring/summer events.

Beautiful, peaceful, and the kids genuinely love running through the gardens. Pavilion rentals are surprisingly affordable.

3. Your own backyard

Good for: Any age, real budget, comfort of home.

Honestly the most underrated option. Bring in a balloon artist, set up a snack table, done. I do a TON of backyard parties — Dundee, Bellevue, Council Bluffs, you name it. Set up at a folding table in the corner, kids line up, magic happens.

4. Public park pavilions

Good for: 15+ kids, warmer months, parents who hate cleanup.

Memorial Park, Elmwood, Hanscom, Standing Bear Lake — all have reservable pavilions. Cheap, big space, kids can run.

5. Make Believe Family Fun Center (Council Bluffs)

Good for: Ages 3–12. Indoor playground + party packages.

A staple for Council Bluffs + Bellevue families. They handle all the logistics so you actually get to enjoy the party.

6. Bowling alleys (Mockingbird Lanes, Western Bowl)

Good for: Ages 6+. Built-in activity, food included.

Classic for a reason. Add balloon entertainment during the gift/cake portion and suddenly it’s not “just bowling” anymore. True story: a kid once asked me to make a balloon bowling pin. First time in 20 years anyone had asked. Did it. Looked great.

7. SkyZone (Trampoline Park)

Good for: Ages 5+, kids with endless energy.

Heads up though — balloons + trampolines = tricky. Stick to the party room before/after jump time. (I learned this the hard way the first time. RIP that balloon dog.)

8. The Big Garage Indoor Family Fun Center

Good for: Ages 3–10. Indoor everything, weatherproof.

Solid all-in-one when it’s raining or freezing outside.

9. Old Market restaurants

Good for: Smaller family gatherings, ages 4+.

I do regular drop-in entertainment at Spaghetti Works and Zio’s Pizzeria in the Old Market. So if you book a private dinner there, there’s a chance you’ll catch me too. Call the restaurant ahead to ask if I’m working that night.

10. Community centers + neighborhood YMCAs

Good for: Bigger groups (20+ kids), all-weather, budget.

Often overlooked. Big rooms, kitchen access, very affordable. Done at least 30 community center parties over the years.

What I’ve learned actually makes a party great

After hundreds of parties:

  • Plan for downtime. Kids need a break from running around. Balloon art is great as the “centerpiece” activity that pulls everyone together.
  • Don’t over-program. One main activity + food + cake + entertainment is enough. Trying to cram in three more things just stresses kids out.
  • Always have a rain plan for outdoor venues. Always.
  • Hire entertainment even if you think you don’t need to. Parents tell me, constantly, that the entertainer was the best money they spent — because it kept the kids occupied while parents got to actually socialize.
